The North America Program (NAP) was set up at the University of Bonn in 1990 with the support of the North Rhine - Westphalian government to cover wide-ranging interdisciplinary teaching and research. It involves the close cooperation of those colleagues at the University of Bonn with a particular interest in North America, and stems from their awareness of the need to make optimal use of existing resources and interdisciplinary methods to broaden scholarly perspectives and better prepare their students for future careers. Recent changes in Europe have shown the value of a comparative approach to the relationship between North America and Europe, whereby attention is paid both to Europe's transatlantic perspective and to North Americas continuing interest in its European past and present. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the new program at the University of Bonn focuses on this relationship between North America and Europe.
